L236, the Cracked Zebra, is a Hypancistrus from the Xingu system in Brazil: a white base with black lines and an all-white belly, growing to about 12 cm. It has been one of the most sought-after L-numbers since its first photo was published.

Its exact origin is debated; the few original fish may have come from the lower Xingu rather than the Rio Iriri, as first reported. Captive-bred lines are now available from breeders.

Keep it at 24–29 °C and pH 6.6–7.6, with current and sinking meaty foods. In a New England winter a tank in a cool room needs a reliable heater to hold that range. See also our L046 Zebra pleco.
