Marimo moss ball

Marimo are a rare ball-shaped growth form of a filamentous green alga, Aegagropila, not a moss. Ball colonies occur in Japan and Iceland; Lake Akan in Japan is the only place with giant colonies over 20 cm. They're protected in both countries, and aquarium marimo come from European stock.

They grow only about 5 mm a year. In 2021, invasive zebra mussels were found in moss balls sold in North American pet stores, so buy from a clean source.
