The Gold Nugget pleco, Baryancistrus xanthellus, was described in 2011 and is found only in the Xingu basin, mainly the Volta Grande. It's sold under several L-numbers, including L018, L085 and L177.

Young fish have broad yellow bands on the dorsal and tail fins that shrink with age; the dark body and head are covered in light spots, and males have broader heads. It reaches about 22 cm standard length.

It's mainly an algae grazer in the wild and needs very warm water, about 27–32 °C (81–90 °F), and won't thrive cooler. In a New England home, plan on a properly sized heater and a lid to hold the heat.
