The chestnut mushroom, Pholiota adiposa, has yellow-to-orange caps up to about 9.5 cm with dark concentric scales, on stems up to 12 cm. In the wild it grows in clusters on beech, poplar and willow across North America, Europe and Asia, mostly in September and October.

Indoors it fruits at about 60–70 °F (15–21 °C). Wait until the block turns orange, which takes 2–3 weeks, before opening it. Don't count on a second flush.
