German White seed garlic

Reserve or join the waitlist

German White, also sold as German Extra Hardy or Northern White, is a porcelain hardneck with big white bulbs, a few large cloves each, and a robust flavour. It's very winter-hardy, which suits New England well.

Like other porcelains, it sends up a scape in June. Cut it to push energy into the bulb, and cook the scape.

Planting German White in Massachusetts

Plant single cloves, pointed end up, from mid-October to early November, a few weeks before the ground freezes, and mulch with straw once it starts to freeze. Harvest in July when the lower leaves brown, then cure the bulbs for 2–3 weeks. Our garlic planting guide has the details. For a second porcelain, see Music.
