Hardneck seed garlic for New England

Spanish Roja seed garlic

Reserve or join the waitlist

Spanish Roja is an heirloom rocambole hardneck that reached the Portland, Oregon area over a century ago under the name "Greek" or "Greek Blue". It has 8–9 cloves under thin purple-brown wrappers, and a very strong, hot, lasting flavour.

It grows well in cold winters and poorly in warm ones, which makes it a natural fit for New England. The trade-off is storage: eat it through the fall and early winter.

Plant cloves in Massachusetts from mid-October to early November; see our garlic planting guide.
