Killarney Red seed garlic
Killarney Red is a rocambole hardneck with 8–9 cloves, bulbs over 2.5 in, and a rich, hot, lasting flavour. Its origin is unknown; it may descend from German Red or Spanish Roja.
It grows well in cold winters and tolerates wet soil better than most rocamboles, a plus in a wet New England spring. Like other rocamboles it stores poorly, so eat it first.
Plant cloves in Massachusetts from mid-October to early November; see our garlic planting guide.
