Aphyosemion australe (lyretail killifish)

Reserve or join the waitlist

The lyretail killifish, Aphyosemion australe, comes from coastal Gabon and the neighbouring Republic of Congo. Males reach about 6 cm. Gold, orange, chocolate and albino strains exist, and wild forms are labelled by collection site and year to keep lines pure.

It's one of the easier killifish. Pairs hang 10–20 eggs a day in mops or plants, and the eggs hatch in 10–20 days. Breed it at about 21–24 °C in soft water. See our guide to keeping tropical fish through a New England winter.

Part of our Rare aquarium fish. Also: Apistogramma cacatuoides (cockatoo dwarf cichlid) · Apistogramma agassizii · Apistogramma macmasteri · Endler's livebearer (pure strain) · Nothobranchius rachovii (bluefin killifish) · Fundulopanchax gardneri (steel-blue killifish) · Corydoras sterbai (Sterba's cory) · Corydoras adolfoi (Adolfo's cory) · Pseudomugil gertrudae (spotted blue-eye) · Betta macrostoma (Brunei beauty) · Scarlet badis (Dario dario) · Celestial pearl danio (Danio margaritatus) · Boraras brigittae (mosquito rasbora).
