Betta macrostoma (Brunei beauty)
The Brunei beauty, Betta macrostoma, is found only in Brunei and northern Sarawak on Borneo, and reaches about 10 cm. It's listed as Vulnerable by the IUCN, and Brunei bans its export.
The male broods the eggs in his mouth for 14–35 days before releasing free-swimming fry. It needs cool-to-warm, very soft, acidic water: 20–25 °C, pH 4–6. See our guide to keeping tropical fish through a New England winter.
