Celestial pearl danio (Danio margaritatus)
The celestial pearl danio, Danio margaritatus, was discovered in 2006 in a spring-fed pool in Shan State, Myanmar, and caused a sensation. Myanmar banned exports in 2007. It reaches about 2 cm.
It was first bred in the UK within weeks of arriving. It scatters around 30 eggs that hatch in about three days. Heavy commercial breeding has led to deformities, so well-bred stock is worth seeking. Keep it at 20–26 °C. See our guide to keeping tropical fish through a New England winter.
