Apistogramma agassizii

Reserve or join the waitlist

Apistogramma agassizii ranges across the Amazon and Solimões basin, from the Ucayali in Peru to the Capim in Brazil. Males reach about 7.5 cm, females 5 cm. Several geographic colour forms exist, and some may be separate species.

Wild fish come from extremely soft, acidic water and some populations may need a very low pH to breed; tank-raised fish are more tolerant and suit community tanks. The female guards eggs and fry in a cave. Keep it at 22–29 °C. See our guide to keeping tropical fish through a New England winter.
