Blue Dream shrimp
Blue Dream is a selectively bred Neocaridina davidi in a deep, opaque blue that covers the whole body, legs included. The best lines look almost navy against dark substrate. As in every Neocaridina, females are larger and more richly, opaquely coloured than males, which are smaller and paler.
The blue comes from iridophores, colour cells in the shell that reflect blue light, or from a lack of dark pigment over bluish flesh. Wild N. davidi are a mottled greenish brown. Every colour line was bred out of that, and a colony left to itself drifts back toward it over generations unless you remove the paler shrimp.
They breed readily. Shrimp mature at about two months, and a berried female carries roughly 20 to 30 eggs for about three weeks. The young hatch as tiny copies of the adults, with no larval stage, so a colony grows in an ordinary tank. Colour is strongest on a dark substrate with green plants. Never release them outdoors: N. davidi has become invasive in warm waterways in several countries, including the United States.
