Harlequin Sulawesi shrimp
The Harlequin shrimp, Caridina woltereckae, was described in 2009. It is found only in Lake Towuti on the Indonesian island of Sulawesi, where it lives on rocky bottoms. Its red-and-white bands look like a candy cane.
It's listed as Critically Endangered on the IUCN Red List. Threats include collection for the aquarium trade, introduced flowerhorn cichlids, pollution and nickel mining. A look-alike, C. spongicola, is sometimes sold under the same name.
Even among Sulawesi shrimp it's hard to keep. It needs a mature, very stable tank with plenty of biofilm, and warm, alkaline water like the Cardinal Sulawesi shrimp.
